Joining the Leauge

We’re excited for you to join us!

All the details you need are on our Registration page. Spots fill up fast, so be sure to follow the steps and set up your account ahead of time so you’re ready when registration opens!

You can absolutely register on your own!

No need to come in with a full team or wait for an invite — everyone signs up individually. We randomly create teams each season, balancing them based on player experience to keep things fair and fun for everyone. Just sign up, show up, and get ready to meet some new teammates!

There’s no set deadline — but don’t wait!

Our seasons tend to fill up fast (we’re talking within 10 minutes of registration opening). Keep an eye on our Registration page and socials for the official launch date, and make sure your account is ready to go ahead of time so you don’t miss out!

The cost to join is $80 per season.

That covers your season dues*, a team t-shirt, and access to QDT-hosted events throughout the season.

If cost is a barrier, please don’t hesitate to reach out — we have a limited pay-it-forward fund available to help support players who need a little financial assistance. We want everyone to have a chance to play.

*Season dues include all the things that help make dodgeball possible including gym permits, event location rentals, event prizing (unless sponsored), insurance, LeagueApp, first-aid, equipment such as timers, whistles, balls, bags, etc.

You can request to be placed with a friend — especially if you’re new!

We get that joining a new league can be a little intimidating, so first-time players are welcome to submit a player-bond request with a friend. Just keep in mind: space is limited, and while we do our best, we can’t guarantee every bond will be placed together.

Before each season, we’ll share a form where you can submit your request. Player-bonds are reviewed individually and apply to that specific season only — they don’t carry over. These requests are mostly reserved for first-time players or folks with medical considerations.

Want to play with a friend long-term? Consider becoming a team captain next season!

Thinking about captaining? We love to hear it!

Captains play a huge role in helping each season run smoothly, and we’re always excited to welcome new leaders into the mix. If you’re interested, head over to our Captain page for a full breakdown of what to expect — from responsibilities to perks.

There’s a bit of extra work involved, but it’s a great way to give back to the league and help shape the season. The captain application form goes live before each season, and you’ll find it right on that page when it’s time.

Yes! We kick things off with a Rules Primer at the start of each season.
It’s a great chance for new — and returning — players to get a refresher on the rules, ask questions, and ease into the season. Our Directors and Captains will walk you through how the game works, then we’ll hit the court for a few casual rounds so you can get a feel for the pace and style of play.

Whether it’s your first time or your fifth season, it’s a fun, low-pressure way to warm up!

Where, When, and What to Expect

Games are played at different gyms depending on the league.

Our Classic League and Little League each have their own home court, so be sure to check out our Location page for all the details on where we play. We keep things central and transit-accessible whenever possible!

Games take place on Monday nights during our Fall (Sept–Dec) and Winter (Jan–Apr) seasons.
Matches typically run between 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM, with occasional events going a little later (up to 11 PM). Once the season starts, your team will receive a full schedule with your game times.

Our league runs two seasons each year: Fall (Sept–Dec) and Winter (Jan–Apr).

We stagger games into Early, Middle, and Late slots, so you won’t be hanging around the gym all night — just show up, warm up, and get playing!

You’ll find out your team at the Draft Party!

Within a week of your official registration confirmation, we’ll send out details about the upcoming Draft Party, where teams and captains are revealed. It’s a fun kickoff to the season and a great chance to meet your new teammates!

After the draft, your captain will set up a group chat so your team can start getting organized (and hyped).

Not much — just bring your energy!

Once you’re registered, within 1 week we’ll send you everything you need to know by email before the season starts. You’ll get to find our who your captain is and meet your team at the Draft Party, and from there, it’s game on!

Just keep an eye on your inbox (and your junk folder, just in case) for any important updates leading up to the season. Other than that, just show up ready to dodge, duck, dip, dive and have a blast!

Gear & What to Bring

Wear something you can move in — and don’t forget your indoor shoes!

You’ll need a good pair of indoor, non-marking athletic shoes for every game. If it’s rainy or snowy outside, please be prepared to change into your indoor shoes at the gym — we want to keep the floor in good shape for everyone.

We also recommend knee pads if you plan on diving or getting low (which you probably will). They’re optional, but your knees will thank you!

Team shirts are included — just make sure we have your correct size!

We provide team shirts at the start of each season, so be sure your shirt size is up to date in your LeagueApps profile. That’s where we pull all the info from, and if it’s not accurate, we may not be able to get you the right fit.

While you’re not required to wear your team shirt, we definitely recommend it — it helps build team spirit and makes it easier to spot your squad on the court!

It’s your call — but safety first!

Glasses and watches are totally fine to wear during games, but we recommend leaving necklaces, dangly earrings, and bracelets off the court. They can break or cause injury during play, and we’d hate for your accessories (or you!) to get hurt.

If you do choose to wear jewelry, just know that it’s at your own risk, and we can’t be responsible for any damage or injuries that happen during gameplay.

No special gear needed — just come ready to move!

All you need to bring are non-marking indoor gym shoes and comfortable athletic shorts or bottoms. We’ll provide the dodgeballs and all other equipment — you just bring the energy!

Lost your team shirt? Don’t worry — it happens!

If you need a replacement, just let your captain know and they’ll pass the request along to us. We can usually order a new one, but an additional fee may apply depending on timing and availability.

Rules & Gameplay

The basics are simple — throw balls, dodge balls, and have fun!

Your goal is to knock out the other team while keeping your own teammates in the game. You can dodge, block, and catch incoming throws — but if you get hit, you’re out!

Catching a ball not only saves you but also eliminates the thrower and lets your team bring back a player (up to the max team size).

We strongly recommend checking out the full rulebook below so you’re game-ready from day one.

Each team has 13 players, including 2 captains.

The number of players on the court depends on the league:
– In Classic League, teams play with up to 7 active players at a time
– In Little League, it’s 6 active players on the court

The rest of your team will be on the sidelines, cheering you on (and getting ready for their next game)!

We use 7-inch foam balls in both leagues.

Soft, grippy, and perfect for dramatic dives — our 7-inch foam dodgeballs are standard across both Classic and Little League. They’re safer than rubber balls and way more fun to throw (and dodge)!

Classic and Little League each have their own vibe!

The main differences come down to gym size, team size, and the number of balls in play. Both are super fun — it just depends on the kind of pace and space you’re into.

Use the links below to explore the details of each league and find the one that’s the best fit for you!

Conduct, Refs, and Fair Play

Kindness first, always.

This is a recreational league and we’re all here to have fun, build community, and throw some balls. We expect all players, captains, and refs to treat each other with respect, inclusivity, and good vibes on and off the court.

Poor sportsmanship or aggressive behaviour won’t be tolerated — we’re here to play with each other, not against each other.

Keep it chill.

If something comes up on the court, your best move is to flag it to your captain. They’ll connect with the right folks to help sort things out calmly and respectfully.

Heated arguments and yelling don’t have a place in QDT — this is a rec league, not the big leagues. Depending on the situation, players may be carded or even asked to sit out. Let’s keep the vibes friendly and fun.

See something off? Let your captain know.

If you notice a player or captain breaking the rules or acting inappropriately, flag it to your captain and they’ll loop in a ref or Director as needed.

Please don’t try to handle it yourself on or off the court. Yelling or arguing can escalate things and might get you carded or even pulled from current or future games.

If the issue is with your captain, please email us at info@queerdodgeball.ca and a League Director will contact you to chat further and next the appropriate steps.

Not all issues can be resolved on the spot, but they will be reviewed by our Directors and followed up on. We take fair play and respectful behaviour seriously.

Yep — we take sportsmanship seriously.

If a participant (player or captain) consistently shows unsportsmanlike behaviour (cheating, aggression, etc.) and it’s been flagged to a Director, they’ll receive a verbal or written warning.

If the behaviour continues or escalates, the participant could be suspended for the season or permanently removed from the league.

We’re all here to have fun, and that only works when everyone respects the game and each other.

Absolutely!

If you ever have an issue or concern, you can always speak to your Captains, or reach out to us directly via email or social media.

For all our contact information, head to our Contact page.

We’re here to help and want to make sure everyone has a great experience.

Odds & Ends

Life happens — and that’s okay!

If you can’t make a game, just let your captain know as soon as you can. They’ll often send out a poll or roll call a day or two before games to check who’s coming.

Keeping your captain in the loop helps the whole team stay organized and ready to play.

If you can’t finish the season, just give your captain a heads-up as soon as possible.

They’ll likely want to fill your spot from our waitlist, which is usually pretty full — so your spot could be a great chance for someone else to jump in and play.

We totally understand that life gets busy, and we appreciate you helping keep the league running smoothly!

Stay in the loop with emails and socials!

We send important info like game times, event details, and surveys through emails from LeagueApps. Be sure to safe-list our emails and check your junk folder if you haven’t heard from us in a while.

Plus, we post updates and reminders on our social media channels — so keep an eye there too for the latest news and fun announcements!
